You can’t send a kid to a candy store, an adult to a Costco, or a coding agent to the internet without a little guidance.

Fortunately, today’s software pros have a growing number of ways to share their non-negotiables and preferences with a coding assistant before it makes its first move. We spoke with a few who shared how to form those important guidelines.

How may I assist you? A global survey of more than 24,000 developers by software company JetBrains, conducted between April to June 2025, found that 85% of respondents “regularly use AI tools for coding and development,” while 62% “rely on at least one AI coding assistant, agent, or code editor.”

When Adam Dimopoulos, CISO at digital security company Entrust, first assumed his role, one of his first orders of business was establishing a formal classification system for the company’s various AI systems.

“I said, ‘Look, we’re not going to be able to implement these guardrails that we’ve predefined unless we classify the different types of AI systems, because it’s going to be a different set of guardrails,’” Dimopoulos told IT Brew.

Dimopoulos said the categorization effort, which he termed “AI taxonomy,” was important because AI tools vary in authority models from vendor to vendor, requiring different governance structures. In May, Gartner found almost half (40%) of enterprises will demote or decommission autonomous agents due to governance gaps caused by uniform governance policies.

There’s a new kid on the already-busy AI block.

IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl is experimenting with a new role to help humans and AI operate better together.

Introducing the HSA. The gig (which is unique to Kyndryl) is known as a human systems architect (HSA). Kyndryl describes this professional as responsible for designing “the collaboration layer between people and AI agents as a system is being created.”

Maria Hatherell, Kyndryl’s first HSA, said the company saw a need for the new role when it noticed clients struggling to successfully launch AI initiatives due to the complexities associated with operational integration.
