This founder pivoted out of a tiny market and hit $1.3M ARR 🔄

Nevo David had a string of failing startups that left his bank account deep in the red. In 2022, he took a growth marketing job at an open-source company, learned how to scale products to tens of thousands of GitHub stars, and used that knowledge to build his own. After a six-month detour on Gitroom (the market that was simply too small), he pivoted to Postiz, an open-source social media scheduler, and grew it to $113k MRR in two years.

Postiz was open source from day one. It lets developers self-host for free forever on a $5 Hetzner box, or pay from $29 a month for the cloud version. The growth is entirely organic: four winning Product Hunt launches, 100k-view Reddit posts on r/selfhosted, n8n templates, SEO, and skills for AI marketplaces. Zero ads.

Joel Hooks and John Lindquist (the guys behind egghead․io) didn't wait around for a polished platform to test their idea. They just zipped up 50 of John’s old screencasts and put them up for sale. The zip file made $6,000 in its first week.

Then they took it a step further and asked people to pay $99 for a year of premium content that didn't even exist yet. Lots of founders get nervous about doing this, but in this case, customers actually paid! That early cash funded the real platform they eventually built, which is now doing about $308k a month.
