Launching a Newsletter 72 Hours After Getting Laid Off 🏈

When Vox Media laid Matthew Brown off in 2020, college-sports media jobs were disappearing. Seventy-two hours later, he launched Extra Points, a newsletter about the business and policy side of college athletics. It now brings in more than $25k in monthly recurring revenue.

He avoided the traffic-and-programmatic-ad treadmill and built around a smaller, deeper audience instead. The newsletter grew into paid subscriptions, advertising, a classroom curriculum featuring Athletic Director Simulator 4000, and a $300/month research library of college-sports contracts, budgets, and policy documents.
